Carl Benjamin was born in Panama to Cecil and Vestina Benjamin on January 22nd, 1938, the eldest of 5 children. He grew up in Panama, and came to the United States on a tennis scholarship to Central State University in Ohio in 1958. He graduated with a degree in mathematics, then earned his Master’s Degree from Syracuse University in New York. A position at Bakersfield High School brought the family to California. Carl then taught mathematics at Bakersfield Junior College for over 40 years; he achieved Professor Emeritus status. After retiring, the couple moved to Oxnard, California.
Having a strong sense of morality, work ethic and excellence, Carl was dedicated to every endeavor and became accomplished in tennis, ping pong, bowling, and chess despite being legally blind in one eye from childhood. He was a man of few words, but very generous and strong in his Christian faith.
Carl is survived by his wife of 53 years, Claudette (Soley) Benjamin, and his 2 daughters, Vonnie Benjamin-Brown (and husband Kenny) and Cami Schermerhorn (and husband Aaron).
He went to be with the Lord on April 10th, 2018.
Services will be held on Friday, April 20th at noon at Conejo Mountain Funeral Home, 2052 Howard Rd., Camarillo, CA.
