Kenneth W. Haugrud

April 29, 1928 ~ January 15, 2022 (age 93) 93 Years Old

Tribute

The world has lost a true gentleman. Long-time Camarillo resident Ken Haugrud passed away peacefully at home with his family on Saturday, January 15th.  It gives us great comfort knowing he is now reunited in heaven with Ruby, his wife of 55 years, and his son, Keith.

Ken was born on April 29, 1928 to George and Elsie (Erickson) Haugrud in Barnesville, MN.  Ken grew up in Minnesota and then entered the Army in 1951, serving in the Korean War. His duty to country took him to Japan and Korea, but not before he came home in 1952 to marry the love of his life, Ruby. Upon discharge from the service, he returned to family life in Minnesota. However, the call of adventure/opportunities  from relatives in California prompted Ken and Ruby to pack up their small family (Cheryl) and drive cross-country to Lancaster, CA. After becoming proficient in the glass trade in those early years, the family moved to Camarillo and ultimately opened their own glass shop, Pleasant Valley Glass, in 1969. Ken always  conducted his business dealings in an upright and honest manner - a man of integrity. Ken and Ruby worked side-by-side serving all the glass needs of the Ventura County communities. They thoroughly enjoyed  creating a 'second family' with their business customers  who became their friends throughout the years.

After over 35 years of being immersed in their Camarillo business, Ken and Ruby retired to enjoy the good life of family, friends, and travel. Keeping with the tradition of spending as much time as possible with extended family  in Minnesota, Ken and Ruby would spend every summer at their second home, a cottage on Lake Maud. They also took great pleasure in their trips to Norway and Hawaii. Ken's favorite enjoyment of retirement was going to all of his grandchildren's school programs, graduations, and sports activities.

Ken never hesitated to share his handyman skills with  his friends, family, and church. A hard worker in his business, retirement only enhanced this special virtue when anyone called with a fix-it request of him.  His mechanical skill was not the only endearing quality of Ken.  He was the ultimate jokester and life of the party. His family and friends looked forward to his funny stories, and his light-hearted banter was also a highlight of the days he spent with his friends at Eggs N Things for his daily breakfast (after Ruby had passed).

Ken will be dearly missed by his daughters, Cheryl  (John) Menzie of Camarillo, Joni (Dustan) Howard of Arizona, and Jean Jacobs of Camarillo. Papa Ken will also be greatly missed by his grandchildren Jason Walters, Melissa (Ryan) Filek, Stacey (Justin) Kaltenbach, Lisa (Jaron) Lowenstein, Jessica Jacobs, and Kory Jacobs (who grew up at Papa's side). Papa was also a loving great-grandpa to Kayley,  Brady, Poppy and Beckley.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, January 26, at 10:00 AM, Peace Lutheran Church, located at 71 Loma Drive, Camarillo, with private family burial to follow.  In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in honor of Ken  to Peace Lutheran Church.
