Tribute

Sean Calvin Payne sailed out of this life, at the age of 46 on April 3. He was always a surprise, beginning with his birth in Kenitra, Morocco. Twins were not expected and six minutes after his sister, Dawn, was born, on March 21, 1973, Sean made his surprising appearance.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Harry and Marian Gruwell, Violet and Howard Payne; aunt, Gail Gruwell, and his beloved mother Leigh Gruwell Jensen.

Surviving Sean is his son Hunter Calvin, parents Bob and Wendy Payne and Stan Jensen, twin sister Dawn Miskulin, siblings Matthew Jensen and Kelly Jensen, three nieces and many loving aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Sean attended Las Posas Elementary School and Monte Vista Junior High School in Camarillo and graduated from El Dorado High School in Placerville in 1991. He attended Cuesta College before moving to Colorado as a painting contractor.

As a guide on the American River, a painting and general contractor, Sean spent most of his life in the outdoors. He loved diving, snowboarding, playing softball and riding his motorcycles. The last months of his life, Sean was living on his boat in Channel Islands Harbor and diving almost every day.

He had a passion for sports of all types, especially football. He set a high jump record at El Dorado High School and was on the soccer, wrestling and football teams there. As an avid sports fan, Sean knew the stats of almost every player in almost every sport. He spent many happy hours watching his much loved Denver Broncos, LA Dodgers, Sacramento Kings and their rivals, the LA Lakers. He wouldn’t answer his phone during games for fear someone might reveal the final score.

Sean lived life on his own terms. He could talk to anyone about anything, surprising people with his wide-ranging knowledge. There was nothing Sean could not do, even if he had never done it before. People loved the light and energy he brought into any situation and the kindness that he demonstrated in many ways with everyone he knew. Sean took great joy in his family, especially his son Hunter.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 27 at Conejo Mountain Funeral Home, 2052 Howard Road in Camarillo. Reception to follow at 3:30. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Diabetes Association in Sean’s name.
