Tribute

Stephen (Steve) John Maulhardt passed away after a lengthy illness on Tuesday, June 8, 2021, at his home in Camarillo, surrounded by his loving family. He was 73.

Stephen was born on September 17, 1947, to parents John Borchard Maulhardt and Jeanne Graves Maulhardt-Sweeney. He grew up in Oxnard and Camarillo and was a proud fourth-generation resident of Ventura County. He attended Villanova Preparatory School in Ojai before completing his BS degree in Business Administration from the Menlo School of Business Administration in 1969. He met his wife Leslie on a blind date in 1968 and they were married on January 16, 1970.

Stephen began his career in Los Angeles as a CPA at Touche Ross & Co and later as CFO of USA Petroleum Company. Following his father’s passing in 1984, Stephen moved his family back to Ventura County so he could manage day to day responsibilities of the family business, Maulhardt Industrial Center in Oxnard. He found a second career in his final two decades, helping establish one of the nation’s leading Opioid Treatment Program (OTP) provider systems in California, Aegis Treatment Centers. At Aegis, Stephen was an impassioned advocate for individuals with a substance use disorder and gave patients a voice as an active member of several state and county committees. In 2019, he was recognized for his work by the American Association for the Treatment of Opioid Dependence (AATOD) with the Nyswander/Dole Award.

Stephen was an active member of his community and held leadership roles in the Oxnard Ambassadors, Greater Oxnard Chamber of Commerce, Ventura County Economic Development Association (VCEDA), and Catholic Healthcare West (CHW). He was a founding member of Padre Serra Parish, serving as a Eucharistic Minister for 25 years and as chair of the Finance Council and ex-officio member of the Parish Council.

Stephen’s greatest source of pride was his family and he actively engaged in their activities, sports, education, careers, and interests large and small. He was known for his warmth, generosity, and hospitality and delighted in doting on his wife, children, and grandchildren. He was a loyal LA Kings fan who graciously invited family and friends to join him at games each season and patiently waited 25 years to see them finally win the Stanley Cup. He had a way of easing any tension with his dry sense of humor and joked with doctors, nurses, and caretakers up until his final moments. Over the years Stephen took his wife and family on many wonderful trips but he was happiest sitting around the big kitchen table for holidays and weekly Sunday night dinners with his family.

Stephen is survived by his wife of 51 years, Leslie; his four daughters Beth, Paige, Victoria (Pete) Konrad, and Tessa; his five grandchildren Ellie Meyring, Kayley Meyring, Travis Harper, Mabel Konrad, and Ginger Konrad; his sister Nancy (Wayne) Huff, and his sister-in-law Lindsay Jones. Stephen was preceded in death by his parents and brothers. Stephen’s heart was as big as the man and his presence will be greatly missed.

The family wishes to thank his doctors and nurses at Dignity Health, UCLA Medical Center, and the Livingston Memorial Visiting Nurse Association for their dedicated and compassionate care.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 7, at Padre Serra Catholic Church, 5205 Upland Road, Camarillo, with Father Patrick Mullen presiding, and will be followed by a reception at the Maulhardt's home. A private interment will be held at Conejo Mountain Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in his memory to The American Association for the Treatment of Opioid Dependence (AATOD): http://www.aatod.org/give/ or The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS): https://donate.lls.org/. Arrangements are under the direction of Conejo Mountain Funeral Home & Memorial Park, 2052 Howard Road, Camarillo, CA.

- A Life Well Lived -

A life well lived is a precious gift,
of hope and strength and grace,
from someone who has made our world
a brighter, better place.

It's filled with moments, sweet and sad
with smiles and sometimes tears,
with friendships formed and good times shared,
and laughter through the years.

A life well lived is a legacy,
of joy and pride and pleasure,
a living, lasting memory
our grateful heart's will treasure.
